We're All Donkeys Chasing Carrots

Most of us go through life without really knowing what we want.

From the very first moment we enter this world (which btw, is a freakin miracle) we are cared for and tended to pretty much all the way up until adulthood.

Throughout this time we’re told that school is important, and since we don’t know any better we have no other option than to do what mom and dad say.

And let’s be honest here.

School is pretty much useless.

Sure you’ll make some friends and do some math, maybe even read a good book or two - but at the end of the day you’d have wasted about 15 years of your life without having learnt any useful skills or done any meaningful work.

You’re never too young to take control of your life, and the earlier you start practicing your craft the better you’ll be at whatever you want to do.

After high school we’re told that we need to go to college.

That without it we’ll end up broke, in jail or addicted to drugs.

The truth though, is that once you’re done with college you’ll be just as confused as you’ve ever been and you’ll be no closer to finding your success or happiness.

But they keep telling you that you’ll be happy once you get a job, and once you do you realise that it’s all just the same bullshit and you’re no happier than you were without one - the only difference is that you’ve now got bills to pay.

And a lot more responsibilities.

So you wait to see what happens… you tell yourself that things would get better when you get the next promotion, that the higher up the ladder you are the more respected you’ll be and the more money you’ll make…

But alas, by now you should already know that none of that will make you happy.

We’re all just donkeys chasing carrots.

Never really knowing what we are doing and always looking forward to the next thing, only to realise that the next thing is not what it’s made out to be.

We’ll just keep waiting for the next thing and then the next thing and then the next thing… Another job… Another promotion… Another trip to Ibiza…

Like donkeys chasing carrots.

But where does it end?

We hope that one day we’ll ‘make it’ and everything will be fine in this world.

But that never happens.

The truth is that you’ll never make it.

You’ll just work hard, struggle and then die.

That is the only guarantee in this life.

But.

If you’re lucky.

You’ll be able to work hard doing work you love.

The type of work that you can’t live without.

The type of work that is worth struggling for.

Because even though you’ll never make it, at least you’ll take part in this journey knowing that you’ve given it your all - with or without the recognition.

I will stop chasing things on a mission to find my happy.

I will stop listening to the people who are trying to dictate my life and instead do the things that I want to do with or without their support.

My happy is within me and within me alone.

And only I have the power to acknowledge that and allow myself to be fine with who I am, what I have and where I am in life right this very second.

I couldn’t care less about your promotions, your MBA or your bank account.

Because deep down inside you cry.

You cry for a life worth struggling for.

A life doing work you love.

I want to make films, to write every single day until I reach my last breath, to break free from societal norms and do things my own way, to be weird, to dance for no other reason than because I can, to explore nations far and wide, to create endlessly, to live with passion, to dream and make an impact in the lives of people I’ve never met. This is the life I want to live.

What about you?
